Internal FiltersInternal Filters
Internal power filters offer the ultimate in convenience. Choose an appropriate model for your tank size, slot the filter into place in an available corner and plug in. What could be easier? Internal filters are also really easy to clean with a full strip down and clean out typically taking about 5 minutes. This type of filter is most commonly utilised in tropical and coldwater setups.
External FiltersExternal Filters
If you require an ultra efficient mix of biological, chemical and mechanical filtration capacity then there is an external canister filter to suit your setup. Modern canister filters are very easy to clean and maintain as well as being almost silent running and very discreet. Canister filters are usable wherever great, flexible filtration is required and are equally at home in marine, tropical or coldwater setups, from smaller, more modest aquariums, right up to those holding several hundred litres.

It's really easy to choose a new filter for your aquarium.

A good place to start is to match aquarium capacty to the filtration ability of the filter. For example, a Fluval 3 internal filter is usable in aquariums up to 150 litres. If your setup is heavily stocked, or if its capacity is really close to the 150 lire limit it's a really good ideal to choose the next model up.

In our experience no-one ever regrets buying a slightly larger filter, but many people struggle with a filter which is a little too small to efficiently manage the waste from a growing fish population.

Internal filters are of course very quick and easy to deal with. Installation is a breeze and clean outs are quick and easy, but you may find that as your fish population grows, an internal filter may ultimately lack the kind of flexibility available from an external canister filter.

External canister filters, despite their apparent bulk are actually great space savers! This is because the canister itself sits b>under the aquarium in the cabinet, or to the side of the aquarium and is linked to the setup itself by two slim hoses.

The only things visible inside your aquarium are the rigid intake pipe and the spray bar return from the canister filter, which is often a huge improvement on the bulk of an internal fillter taking up an entire corner.

Whichever filter type you choose, remember that a small amount of regular maintennce will vastly prolong the life of your filter and will also improve your fishes health by reducing waste levels and lowering the overall bacteria count within the aquarium and filtration system.

Great filtration is the cornerstone of aquarium success.
